Are there good music venues around FAMU?

Musicians and music fans living in FAMU apartments will be happy to learn about the thriving music and art scene surrounding the university. The area has plenty of venues to catch large and small sized concerts which will be sure to satisfy anyone looking to attend or perform in music events. FAMU also has a renowned University radio station, which features upcoming musicians and helps to organize the music community. Catch their regular broadcasts on 90.5 FM in Tallahassee and consider getting involved if you want to be more in touch with the music scene. Here are my favorite venues for FAMU students to see music:

First Fridays at Railroad Square

Every first Friday of the month, Railroad Square Art Park hosts a music and arts festival which works to showcase local talent and strengthen the art community. Located within walking distance of FAMU campus and surrounded by FAMU apartments, this event is the perfect opportunity to get to know local musicians. There's also plenty of bars and restaurants within the park which host simultaneous concerts, making First Friday's a great opportunity for musicians to get booked. Mark your calendar for this monthly event!

The Junction at Monroe

The Junction at Monroe is a mid-sized venue which hosts more experienced musicians who are ready to take on a bigger stage. Shows here usually charge cover, but their professional sound system and large venue area make it worth the price. Less experienced musicians can also check out their open-mic night to test out the venue for a quick song. You can catch music here most nights of the week, but be sure to check out their website to check on who's playing before heading over.

Baja's Beachclub

Baja's is one of the most popular clubs in Tallahassee, frequented by FSU and FAMU students alike. Located on Pensacola Street , Baja's features the most prominent DJ's playing music for the lively nightlife over the weekends. Electronic musicians can consider this venue to be a mark of their rise to prominence in the club scene. Fans of music can also keep their eyes on the less regular concerts hosted at the club. Past events include Megan Thee Stallion, Borgore, Chief Keef, and Space Jesus.

These three venues represent the small, mid-sized, and larger venues for live music near the FAMU area. Attending these locations frequently will give anybody a good introduction to the music scene in Tallahasee, though it is important to remember the heart and soul of any college music community: house shows. If you are an upcoming artist, or someone who supports underground music, you'll want to keep your eye out for house shows. These intimate shows give a great platform for up-and-coming artists and help keep the art scene thriving!
